One event outlined the impact of crying modern slavery and the other looking to the future on how digitisation can help innovation in fashion.

Embed Dignity

The Embed Dignity Event took place in Leicester on Tues 2nd July including brief discussion of the research report (click here) taking stock of present advocacy and other developments in the garment industry in Leicester, and discussion on the way forward such as how we can contribute to discussions around the UK’s Environmental Audit Committee.

This event also highlighted the lack of steps taken by fast fashion brands to address exploitation in their supply chains in the UK.

Digital Fashion Innovation Conference

The Digital Fashion Innovation Conference took place in Manchester on July 2nd - 4th, which we attended on the Wednesday. Hosted by Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem with many in attendance, the main event focus was about working, organising and publishing together, with a variety of keynote speakers over the 3 days including:

Jason Kent, Chief Exec Officer for British Textile Machinery Association, with his talk titled “Towards a digital twin for the global textiles and apparel supply chain.” It was implied that 2027 will introduce textile waste processing machinery, which Digital Twins will help accelerate that process but a lot of funding will be needed to make this happen via cross-collaboration to become more sustainable.

Two lecturers from Manchester Fashion Institute - discussing ageism in the fashion industry and how to make marketing for fashion to become more inclusive for the older generation specifically of African descent. How we can use AI technology in marketing in the fashion world.

Liz Tregenza - “from Ebay to Vinted: selling secondhand fashion”. By 2025, 10% of the global apparel market is expected to be secondhand (via peer-to-peer platforms), helping to extend the lifetime of products. Key factors encouraging trading of secondhand products include: the cost of living crisis (side hustles), short trend cycles of clothing, and the rise in easy-to-use P2P platforms with improved smartphone cameras allowing higher quality photos to be taken and uploaded onto these platforms.

We hope to continue attending many great events like these to connect with likeminded individuals and work together to improve the standards of our industry.
