It’s not often that you get a chance to speak directly to the CEO of Innovate UK, Indro Mukerjee.
As part of the our LLEP innovation board meeting yesterday at the Space Park, a Q&A session took place with Indro. The board outlined our vision of growth in the Leicestershire economy through the use of innovation and its aspirations to grow the economy by 5% which is well above the national average.
The board also outlined the challenges currently faced by SMEs in the region. Indro was very impressed with the energy and vibrancy of the region and also advocated that upskilling, diversity and inclusion were very important contributors to innovation.
Sajjad Khan, ATMF Chair, asked about how important reshoring of manufacturing was given the global supply chain uncertainty and what can Innovate UK do to encourage this?
A lengthy discussion took place around this topic, and Indro stated that there was definitely a need to reshore and prioritising certain industries was a necessity given the current geopolitical climate.
We moved from there to the Space Centre in the evening where the Leicestershire Innovation Festival 2023 Awards were taking place. It was a fantastic turnout. Well done to all the winners and finalists. Huge congratulations to Dr Nik Kotecha for winning the Innovation Lifetime Achievement award.
